CHAPTER FORTY
Demon Slayer Qing
AS THE FOUR demons charged towards Qing, he surveyed the battlefield. There had once been grass where the pentagram was, but hundreds of feet had turned it to mud a long time ago. Not the ideal battlefield. He could easily slip and fall prey to their longer ranged weapons. Should he charge out to meet them? No. This wasnât a fight he could expect to win head on. He needed to hold out for the others.
He glanced behind and saw Geaser hacking at the ropes of the lumberjack-like man. âCome on, Karter. Itâs time to get out of here,â Geaser said as the first rope broke. Rowan was halfway through freeing Timmy, the lanky man.
Good.
He turned to face the oncoming enemies. It was time to see what Firebolt did to enemies.
Health: 160/160
Mana: 47/60
Enough mana for four Firebolts.
He breathed deep, centered himself, and drew heat from the air. It flowed into his hand, and as he heard the crackle, he fed it mana from his internal reservoir. A flame burst alive in his right hand. He stared the extra horny demon straight in its ugly, yellow irises and flung the Firebolt. By taking out the leader, he might make the others pause.
The Firebolt shot off, and it lit the ground up as it raced towards the demon.
Will it kill in one hit? If so, I have enough mana to take out the others. If I can end the fight before it starts, then we can flee.
As the Firebolt approached, the demon stepped to its right. The bolt of fire shot past harmlessly. Yellow eyes glowing, Horny cried out a menacing laugh, its wart-covered tongue lolling out of its mouth. Qingâs heart sank. Firebolt was a skill-shot, not an aimed ability. He was an idiot for not having tested it on a moving target earlier.
He called up another Firebolt and threw it even harder, trying to estimate where the demon would be. Horny dodged again.
âCrap.â
This wasnât helping. He needed to conserve mana. Like archers or riflemen in movies, he needed bravery. He steeled himself to wait until the enemy was so close he couldnât miss.
As the demons closed within thirty feet, he threw a Firebolt at Punky, screaming, âtake this you bastards!â This time his aim was nearly true, and the firebolt clipped the mohawked demonâs thigh. It staggered to the ground, smoke rising, but it picked itself right back up.
Qing breathed as if he had run a mile, adrenaline rushing through his system. He had to do better. The demons were nearly upon him, spread out in a half-moon.
He conjured up a Firebolt in each hand. They were nearly upon him, but Quick Reflexes was off cooldown. Could they dodge at this range?
With a snarl, he threw one at Horny, as powerfully as he could. The Firebolt, a tiny comet of blazing fury, struck the three-horned demon squarely in the chest. Not only was the spell so raging hot it blackened the skin, but there was a mass to it that surprised Qing.
